Formula and traditional rule
This calculator uses the Chinese Lunar New Year boundary for the selected reference year. Chinese lunar age starts at 1 at birth and increases when the Chinese lunar year changes, rather than on a Gregorian birthday.

Calculate Chinese lunar age, also called traditional virtual age.
Last updated: June 22, 2026
Use traditional virtual age based on the Chinese lunar year.
Guide
This calculator uses the Chinese Lunar New Year boundary for the selected reference year. Chinese lunar age starts at 1 at birth and increases when the Chinese lunar year changes, rather than on a Gregorian birthday.
For example, a baby born on 2024-02-09 is in the 2023 Chinese calendar year. On 2024-02-10, the 2024 Chinese Lunar New Year begins, so the estimated traditional lunar age is 2.
Do not calculate lunar age by simply adding 1 to international age in every case. The result depends on whether the relevant lunar new year has passed.
This tool is focused on Chinese traditional age reckoning. It is not a moon-phase or Hijri age calculator.
Calculation steps
Step 1
Birth date 2024-02-09, reference date 2024-02-10
Step 2
This calculator uses the Chinese Lunar New Year boundary for the selected reference year. Chinese lunar age starts at 1 at birth and increases when the Chinese lunar year changes, rather than on a Gregorian birthday.
Step 3
Starting age: Traditional virtual age starts at 1 at birth. Age change: Age increases around the Chinese lunar new year, not necessarily on the birthday. Official use: Use international age when an official record requires ordinary calendar age.
Step 4
Traditional lunar age: 2. 2024 Chinese Lunar New Year began on 2024-02-10, so the related Chinese calendar year changes.
This calculator estimates traditional Chinese lunar age by comparing the birth date and reference date against the Chinese Lunar New Year boundary for the selected reference year. Results may differ from systems that use lunar birthday, zodiac year, or fortune-telling chart rules.
| Assumption | How this page handles it |
|---|---|
| Starting age | Traditional virtual age starts at 1 at birth. |
| Age change | Age increases around the Chinese lunar new year, not necessarily on the birthday. |
| Official use | Use international age when an official record requires ordinary calendar age. |
| Input | Output | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Birth date 2024-02-09, reference date 2024-02-10 | Traditional lunar age: 2 | 2024 Chinese Lunar New Year began on 2024-02-10, so the related Chinese calendar year changes. |
| Birth date 2024-02-11, reference date 2024-02-12 | Traditional lunar age: 1 | Both dates are after the 2024 Lunar New Year boundary, so the related Chinese calendar year is the same. |
| Birth date 2000-01-01, reference date 2026-06-22 | Traditional lunar age: 28 | The birth date falls before the 2000 Chinese Lunar New Year, so its related Chinese calendar year is 1999. |
| Birth date 2000-02-06, reference date 2026-06-22 | Traditional lunar age: 27 | The birth date falls after the 2000 Chinese Lunar New Year, so its related Chinese calendar year is 2000. |
Edge cases
A Gregorian birthday may not change lunar age if the traditional rule uses the lunar year boundary.
Birth dates near Lunar New Year are the most likely to produce surprising results.
Traditional lunar age should not be used where a legal or administrative age is required.
This tool is focused on Chinese traditional age reckoning. It is not a moon-phase or Hijri age calculator.
Lunar age is a cultural age-reckoning estimate. For legal, school, medical, and official records, use the required official age system.
No. The difference depends on birth date and whether the lunar new year has passed.
No. It estimates traditional age reckoning, not moon phase or lunar illumination.
Usually no. Use the official age system required by the form or institution.
The calculator handles the age estimate from entered dates, but lunar-boundary assumptions still matter.
No. They are related traditional age concepts but use different cultural rules and contexts.
We use these sources to define the age-counting rule, official context, or life-stage assumptions used by this calculator.
