Find school start year, grade, and cutoff age

Choose a location for an automatic planning rule, see the full school timeline, or use an exact custom cutoff.

Guide

How location, cutoff dates, and birth dates determine school entry

Start with the education system, not a generic age chart

School entry is organized differently across countries and regions. A five-year-old may enter Kindergarten, Reception, Foundation, Prep, Primary 1, or another locally named stage. Location mode selects a planning rule and the correct terminology before calculating the first entry year and later school stages.

The cutoff creates the entry cohort

The calculator finds the first school year in which the child reaches the required entry age by the regional cutoff. A birthday one day after the cutoff normally moves the planning estimate to the following intake. The result displays the exact age on the cutoff so close boundary cases remain visible.

A complete timeline is more useful than one grade guess

After estimating the first entry year, the tool maps every later stage using the terminology of the selected education system. The table shows the school year and age reached during each stage, including the final listed year. It is a planning sequence, not a guarantee that a child will never repeat, accelerate, transfer, or defer.

Custom cutoff and exact-age modes remain available

District-set policies, private schools, early-entry programs, and assessments often need an exact local date. Custom cutoff mode applies the school's stated minimum age, while exact-age mode produces reproducible years, months, days, total months, and total days for testing or records. These modes avoid forcing a regional preset onto a context it does not cover.

Best use and evidence limits

Use location mode for early planning when its evidence label fits the decision, then confirm enrollment with the responsible authority. Canada and Australia link every supported jurisdiction to a first-party government source. The United States baseline now uses the June 2023 Education Commission of the States statute comparison, with current first-party sources for rules specifically reverified in 2026; district-controlled US states and Saskatchewan require a user-entered current cutoff instead of silently applying a placeholder date.

Calculation steps

Step-by-step calculation

Step 2

Rule

School entry is organized differently across countries and regions. A five-year-old may enter Kindergarten, Reception, Foundation, Prep, Primary 1, or another locally named stage. Location mode selects a planning rule and the correct terminology before calculating the first entry year and later school stages.

Step 3

Calculation

Regional rule: The selected location supplies entry age, cutoff month and day, school-year pattern, local terminology, and a directly displayed evidence level. First entry intake: The first intake is the earliest supported intake in which completed age on the cutoff reaches the stated requirement. South Australia: The calculator models both Term 1 and Term 3 Reception entry and carries the six-term mid-year Reception sequence into the later timeline. Timeline: One stage is added per school year except where a published intake explicitly changes the first-stage duration; repetition, acceleration, transfer, and deferral are not assumed. Override: A local cutoff replaces the preset month and day while preserving the selected education-system timeline.

Step 4

Result

Estimated Kindergarten start: 2027–2028. The birthday falls one day after the September 1 planning cutoff, so the estimated intake moves to the following year.

Regional rule coverage and planning assumptions

Location mode provides a reproducible planning estimate from a jurisdiction-linked rule. Local authorities and schools remain responsible for enrollment and placement.

AssumptionHow this page handles it
Regional ruleThe selected location supplies entry age, cutoff month and day, school-year pattern, local terminology, and a directly displayed evidence level.
First entry intakeThe first intake is the earliest supported intake in which completed age on the cutoff reaches the stated requirement.
South AustraliaThe calculator models both Term 1 and Term 3 Reception entry and carries the six-term mid-year Reception sequence into the later timeline.
TimelineOne stage is added per school year except where a published intake explicitly changes the first-stage duration; repetition, acceleration, transfer, and deferral are not assumed.
OverrideA local cutoff replaces the preset month and day while preserving the selected education-system timeline.

School start year, timeline, and exact-age examples

InputOutputWhy it matters
California; born 2021-09-02Estimated Kindergarten start: 2027–2028The birthday falls one day after the September 1 planning cutoff, so the estimated intake moves to the following year.
England; born 2022-06-15Estimated Reception start: 2026–2027The child turns four before the August 31 cohort cutoff.
Born 2018-02-28; test date 2026-03-018 years, 0 months, 1 dayExact-age mode respects real month lengths and leap years.
Born one day after the regional cutoffEstimated first entry moves to the following supported intakeThe exact cutoff age and intake name remain visible for verification.
South Australia; turns five between May 1 and October 31Term 3 mid-year Reception intakeThe timeline shows six terms of Reception before Year 1.

Edge cases

Enrollment situations that need local confirmation

District-set or changing cutoffs

A planning preset cannot replace the current district calendar. Use the local cutoff override when the authority publishes a different date.

Deferred or early entry

Readiness assessments, summer-born deferral, Transitional Kindergarten, mid-year intake, and waivers follow separate rules that require local review.

Transfer, acceleration, or repeated year

The timeline assumes one stage per year after first entry. A school record takes precedence when the child has already enrolled.

Leap-day birth

Exact-age mode applies a consistent calendar convention, but the authority controls how a February 29 birthday is treated for eligibility.

When to use and when not to use this calculator

Use it when

Use location mode for early school-entry planning and a full grade timeline; use custom or exact-age mode when a school, district, test, or program supplies its own official date.

Do not use it when

Do not treat the estimate as an enrollment or placement decision. Confirm the current cutoff, exceptions, deferral route, residency rules, and existing school record with the responsible authority.

School starting age and grade timeline questions

What year will my child start school?+

Choose the country and region and enter the birth date. The tool finds the first intake in which the child reaches the preset entry age by the cutoff, then shows the full timeline.

Does the current grade estimate guarantee placement?+

No. It assumes continuous yearly progression from the estimated first entry. Existing records, transfers, deferrals, acceleration, and school decisions can change placement.

What if my district uses a different cutoff?+

Enable the local cutoff override or use custom cutoff mode, then confirm the result with the school.

Can I still calculate age for an evaluation?+

Yes. Exact-age mode calculates chronological age on a testing, evaluation, or record date.

Why does the result say local verification is required?+

Some jurisdictions delegate the operational cutoff or exceptions to districts. The calculator withholds an automatic answer until you enter the current local date.

How does South Australia's mid-year intake work?+

Children turning five from May 1 through October 31 can start Reception in Term 3 and complete six terms of Reception; the displayed timeline accounts for that extra half-year.

Can the calculator approve an exception?+

No. Only the school or governing authority can apply waivers, readiness rules, deferrals, or early-entry pathways.
